Inverse Goldilocks
I know it’s been a rather busy week here at Plex, but we have one more exciting bit of news for you that we wanted to share. As you know, we really like giving you a choice of platforms and devices on which to enjoy your media, and we’re adding a new one to the list today: Google TV.
As you all know, unless you’ve been living under a tech rock, Google is pushing out Google TV 2.0 with support for Google Marketplace, and Plex is one of the 50 companies launching an app with the release. The media support in the new version is quite rich (e.g. you can play a 1080p MKV file without a problem), and at $99 we think this will be a really great device for Plex.
Darrin, who leads the team who made it all happen, has more details in his post over here.

this looks sweet, but it means that I have to start sharing Plex with more of my mac hating friends. Why would they buy an appleTV/mac mini if googleTV can plexify their lounge room instead!
Apple tv vs google tv!! FIGHT!!!! How exciting! Thanks
Amazing… Simply amazing… Now get the Linux version out so I can use all this goodness!
Question, it says you can play 1080p MKVs without a problem, but in Darrin’s blog it says it doesn’t work with transcoding. Does this mean the hardware is capable of doing this? If so, the sony tvs, blueray, or the logitech review?
Awesome!!! Plex is almost future proof
If Apple ran Plex, on the Apple homepage, it would say something like this: “Your media, anywhere. Anytime.”
My Logitech Revue is still pre-honeycomb, and it plays 1080p mkv without a problem over WIFI. I’m using the (built-in and pretty crap right now, but supposed to also be updated) Logitech Media Player. It unfortunately doesn’t do DTS audio, yet. I’m looking forward to the Honeycomb build, and I’m looking forward to Plex for it. But even in its pre-honeycomb state, I love it.
Wow this is really great, I can’t wait to get the google tv update and try this.
I’m a bit surprised that Plex hasn’t been bought out by Apple or Google considering how powerful it is and incorporation into so many devices. Plex is definitely the model for HTPC experience.
@Gary – correct – we direct play all media at this point. While this won’t work for everything the good news is support is very rich: http://code.google.com/tv/android/docs/gtv_media_formats.html
So will the Hulu channel actually work on Google TV seeing since Hulu has blocked Google TV?
@darrin – Excellent! Thanks for the response. I may pick one of these up for a 2nd room. Doesn’t seem like it will play my video_ts stuff though, getting to that point where I may have to convert them. These new updates are awesome, great stuff guys!
Nested collections, please, Elan!
When are they coming?
Thks
+1 for nested collections
and the ability to hide watched items in any subsection (seems to me the same issue, multiple filter would be very cool)
thx guys, great work! ;o)
If i buy a Revue will I need to have my content streamed from a mac to google tv (like on apple tv) or will the Revue work similarly to a mac mini where i don’t need another computer?
@Brent I have Plex installed on my Sony Google TV and only a limited number of plug-ins are appearing for access in the Channels menu. (So… not hulu or any of the major networks)
I love multiplatform and all, but id rather see more native tv support tran more android fragmentation. If the droid team van take all this on, kudos though.
Interesting. But I think running Plex on one of the Roku boxes is still a better deal than Apple TV or Google.
While the Roku/Apple TV/Google TV apps are a nice start I’d still love to see a full blown Plex client, and even a Media Server, running on my WDTV Live Hub. Plex is just soooo much faster and better looking than WD’s software.
I have a leaked version of HC running on my Revue with the media server running on a dedicated linux box. It works pretty damn well! There are a few bugs (pause button doesnt work).
As for the plugins, how do you add them? I dont see them anywhere in the media server option or the client on my TV
The WD TV Live Plus has been an incredible device for me. I believe it wins the all important battle of file compatibility over the Roku/Apple/Google devices quite handily. I’ve got two of them and two Mac Minis serving awesome Kardashian free media all over the house. My only beef with the WD product? It sorely needs the Plex treatment on it’s lackluster GUI. And count me as one of the people weary of WD’s almost universal exclusion from these media box discussions. It’s the best of the bunch.
Be careful before you put too much faith into the Logitech revue:

Please plex don’t sell your self out to google or apple please just make plex a pay service ESP the cloud hell I would pay
