Plex v0.9.2.3 – #velociraptorblood

March 17th, 2011 | Category: Release | Author: elan

You’ve been patient, and now it’s finally here! We’re not enabling auto-update quite yet for it, so consider this a pre-release. It might even have a bug or two (gasp!). Play with it, and please let us know how you like it. Mac and Windows downloads are available on the home page.

The iOS app is just getting wrapped up and getting ready for submission.

(Also, we know that some people are having issues with A/V sync and other playback issues. Please realize that we’re aware of this, and have plans for addressing it. Really.)

Also, bear in mind that skins need updating for the universal search functionality. Maverick214 and Reddragon220 are hard at work at this, as is se.bastian, who just released his amazing RetroPlex skin, and updated it already to support search. You can get RetroPlex and other skins via the via the most excellent Preen Skin Manager.

Search

  • NEW: Universal Search.
  • NEW: Direct Play and Direct Streaming for clients.
  • NEW: Subtitle support in agents, and streaming subtitles from server to clients (SRT/SMI/SSA).
  • NEW: Support for secure access via Web Media Manager.
  • NEW: Turbo Scanning (option-click to do regular “deep” scan).
  • NEW: Soft Deletion.
  • NEW: Added the By Folder second level menu.
  • NEW: Support for our Bonjour replacement, known as G’Day Mate (GDM). Easy discovery!
  • NEW: [Win] Support for storing application support files anywhere.
  • FIX: The “Add Application” button was broken.
  • FIX: Don’t refresh metadata every two weeks.
  • FIX: In rare cases a Python process would take 100% CPU.
  • FIX: “Unwatched” section second title was incorrect.
  • FIX: Browsing for subtitles on Plex for Mac client.
  • FIX: Flash 10.1/10.2 works now.
  • FIX: With newer Flash installed, PMS is not restarted after 5.1 audio (as Flash but was fixed).
  • FIX: Refresh works with local media agent even if media isn’t matched (for subs, posters).
  • FIX: [Win] Various crashes (shutdown, during scans)
  • FIX: [Win] Issue with dialogs popping up asking you to insert drive.
  • FIX: [Win] Updated to latest transcoder, fixing lots of issues.
  • FIX: [Win] Make sure we don’t conflict with installed Pythons.
  • FIX: [Win] Lack of season/episode posters.
  • FIX: Movies with ratings of 10 don’t show up under “5 stars”
  • FIX: Any “phantom” media in the database is whacked after a scan.
  • FIX: Don’t let the machine sleep while transcoding.
  • FIX: Empty machine name crash.
  • FIX: Support for audio playback from Android with security enabled.
  • FIX: Add countries and producers tags to metadata models.
  • FIX: Media is downloaded on metadata refresh, and always kept around.

And gobs of other fixes…

This release, as always, is brought to you by Barkley, who is bummed that lilikoi season is over.

Stunning release. Well worthy of a 1.0 (come on already, what are you afraid of?)

  2. buschwusch March 17th, 2011 12:10 am

    aaaw, JEALOUS!
    i just migrated to ubuntu.

    Flash 10.1/10.2!!! Yeah, baby!

  5. shapethelola March 17th, 2011 12:14 am

Nice to hear, but mine auto updated after I started plex :)

  6. Eric March 17th, 2011 12:16 am

    Thanks Elan.
    It’s update time!

  7. dev March 17th, 2011 12:26 am

ty elan! this is sweet! trying it now :)

  8. SteeBro March 17th, 2011 12:27 am

Just updated and wanted to leave you a big fat THANK YOU!

I can only imagine how hard you guys worked for this release and the (hopefully) following ones.

Plex is my favorite piece of software and I use it daily! Really glad I discovered your product!

Btw Barkley seems to be hungry;)

  9. Syncopation March 17th, 2011 12:28 am

Rescan of my library took more than 2 hours. I got 23000 music titles and it seems that was the long part.

Otherwise I can’t wait to get rid of Plex-Fix and finally be able to use latest Flash.

    KUDOS!

  10. Jper415 March 17th, 2011 12:30 am

Awesome, thanks to all the plex devs!

Special thanks to Elan for all the transparency and twitter updates!

    Keep being awesome.

  12. Cam March 17th, 2011 12:31 am

    Absolutely brilliant!
You said the new scanning was fast, but WOW! Its just awesome :)

I was just curious about this note though:

“NEW: Support for our Bonjour replacement, known as G’Day Mate (GDM). Easy discovery!”

    What exactly will that mean?

Simply a background change and users won’t notice any difference?

Great job to the entire Plex team! :)

  13. sivil. March 17th, 2011 12:36 am

Yes!!!! I Can’t wait for the iOS update.

  14. Mark March 17th, 2011 12:40 am

    Quick bug report:

I’ve installed the new version on my Mac Mini (via manual download) where my media library lives, and on my Macbook Pro (sometimes used as a client) via auto-update prompt.

Tried to checkout Netflix on the Mini and it works fine. However, on the Macbook Pro, the “Plex Online” menu brings up no options (largely a blank screen with just “Applications” in the title) and the same goes for the video plugins and other plugins menus (which all work on the Mini.

Is this a bug? Or am I overlooking something obvious? Pretty sure it all worked ok on both machines with the previous install…

  15. Jason Anderson March 17th, 2011 12:41 am

Oh sweet! It’s awesome. And the retro skin is really nice. Searching is really amazing.

Cannot wait for the iOS app to be updated too.

  16. lhodgkins March 17th, 2011 12:42 am

Keep up the good work!! Huge speed difference, just navigating the the menus alone is incredible!!

    Best release to date!!!!

    Great Job!!

  17. bgm98 March 17th, 2011 12:50 am

Really awesome update… As soon as I get my new iPad, I will be donating to the beer fund… Great work!

  18. brent112 March 17th, 2011 12:59 am

Do we need to do anything special (library refresh) after the install? I installed and after it finished every single thing i tried streamed to by iphone and ATV failed. I had to install previous version. I will install and test some more tomorrow.

  19. Newpond March 17th, 2011 1:19 am

    excellent work guys!
    just a couple of things…

Just uploaded the new windows version yet the version number lister under “About Plex Media Server” still says 9.1.17 although there is now a security option i never had before so i am presuming this has upgraded OK.
Also under Preferences the library icon is still greyed out. any ideas?
    thanks guys.

  20. Soli March 17th, 2011 1:42 am

And the bug that the video is playing in the background whenever the screensaver is active is still there.
I mean: If the screensaver is active and you choose to watch a movie with the ios app. The movie will begin playing in the background, and the screensaver will still be active. Why oh why has this not been fixed? It’s been there from the first release of Plex Nine. I need to have the screensaver active to protect my plasma..

Yes, I am eternally grateful for Plex and all that.. ;)

  21. elan March 17th, 2011 1:45 am

@Newpond – 9.1.7 is the old version. The new version should report correctly as 0.9.2.3

  22. Raphael Essoo-Snowdon March 17th, 2011 1:48 am

Fantastic as always Elan! Incredible update.

  23. dev March 17th, 2011 1:55 am

ah elan .. the search doesn’t work with music that’s in iTunes, right? it works only if i add it to plex, like a source for music ? :(

  24. Jason March 17th, 2011 2:38 am

@Elan You are a god among ants. This is amazing. I am not complaining, but please please when you have a chance please ass the old fast scroll option. You used to be able to press left and the dot would turn red and it would do page scroll instead of regular scroll. It would be so useful since many people have thousands of movies and dont want to search by first letter. Thanks!!

  25. Darby March 17th, 2011 2:52 am

    Great job! Thank you!

  26. slowrobot March 17th, 2011 3:11 am

So I’m guessing that until the iOS update hits that iOS streaming won’t work with this version? Also, Linux PMS please! :)

  27. clx March 17th, 2011 3:35 am

absolutely amazing… thank you to the whole team for your hard work!

  28. Travis March 17th, 2011 3:43 am

Wow Elan, this is a superb release. I can’t believe how fast the menu navigation is now, there must have been some serious optimisations to the media server in general. Stunning work!

  29. roland March 17th, 2011 6:10 am

    Great release!
@Elan, are there still plans to release a Ubuntu-PMS in the near future?

  30. Roland March 17th, 2011 6:35 am

    Great release!
@Elan, any plans for a Ubuntu-PMS release in the near future?

  31. xain09 March 17th, 2011 8:18 am

Anotger great update. Search is very welcomed:-) Can’t waut for the iOS update since I use my iPad mainly for browsing.

  32. Evgeny March 17th, 2011 8:58 am

    What is “Soft Deletion” ?!

and how long should we wait for “Rename and Delete” feature ?!

  33. elan March 17th, 2011 9:03 am

@Evgeny: You can read more about the feature here: http://elan.plexapp.com/2011/03/09/coming-attractions-part-1/

  34. Indy March 17th, 2011 9:41 am

    Hi Elan,

    Thank you for the update,
I am soooooooo happy with this :D

    You’re the best !

  35. Smithcraft March 17th, 2011 9:57 am

    :( Maybe at some point…

  36. Chapindad March 17th, 2011 10:59 am

Thank you for the update. The speed increase in the menu is very welcome. The flash update is unbelievable. Once you get the update for iOS done then everything will be complete for me. I will be checking the app store every few hours. :)

  37. Daan March 17th, 2011 11:37 am

this is odd, searching works fine when I type but the on-screen keypad doesn’t seem to work? also, there’s no way to press “i” to get a movie’s information in the search results, it just puts the letter i after your searchterm, which makes you lose your search results, and after removing the i it only displays youtube results, no longer anything from the library?

  38. jedi March 17th, 2011 11:43 am

i seem to recall something about soft deletion – well i’ve recently moved a few movies and the old location hasn’t been removed, so now have two of each entry.

how do we hard delete the old entries?

oh and why do i suddenly have 300,000 “http” (session?) files in my trash now?

  39. Daan March 17th, 2011 11:59 am

and it doesn’t seem to search over the network… hmmm. this is weird. Maybe an install issue? I really don’t want to have to remove all of my local data and scan everything again :(

  40. Alxscott March 17th, 2011 12:48 pm

    Hi,
Not sure if it is me being special, but in the prior release if I held the menu button on my remote it would take me straight to the shutdown selection. It now however takes me to search?! Is this how it is ment to be now or a bug?!

    Thank you!!!

  41. Fourztar March 17th, 2011 1:03 pm

Great update! .. Just got one problem. I played around with some different skins, and now I`m stuck with the retroplex skin because plex crashes everytime I try to access “settings” Any suggestions on how I can fix this? :)

  42. Danny March 17th, 2011 1:25 pm

I’m excited to try out the new release. This will be my first Plex update since I purchased my Mac Mini and downloaded Plex.

I won’t be like one of those that says thanks and then asks where the h*ll is this feature or that.

I just wanted to say thank you and let you know that beer fund money will be incoming!

  43. Doug March 17th, 2011 2:20 pm

Sweet! Thanks for this mate, after trying it all out for a month or 2 I finally bought a Mac Mini a few weeks ago just to run Plex on it. Really is great, thanks again!

  44. knoxer March 17th, 2011 4:05 pm

In theory, with ‘Direct Play’ should my old core solo Mac Mini be fast enough to handle serving SD h.264 video (Handbrake ‘Apple Universal’ preset) to my iPad or iPhone? I haven’t bought the iOS app yet, since I knew my computer couldn’t handle transcoding, but if this has a chance of working now I’ll be first in line for the new app!

  45. Newpond March 17th, 2011 5:52 pm

@elan re the version number being wrong. Yes like a complete idiot (and in my haste to get it loaded)I had in fact de installed the old version and then re installed it again! (left it on my desktop by accident).
    Sorry…
    cheers

  46. haveacoke March 17th, 2011 6:11 pm

do we have an ETA on the iOS updates? Thanks.

  47. elan March 17th, 2011 8:08 pm

@havacoke: We’ll let you know when we push it to the store.

  48. elan March 17th, 2011 8:09 pm

@knoxer: Yes, as long as those files are configured for “fast start” which I’m not sure if Handbreak does.

  49. elan March 17th, 2011 8:12 pm

@Daan: No need to rescan anything, you just have to make sure you have the latest version of the server running everywhere. Check my post here: http://forums.plexapp.com/index.php/topic/24460-search-doesnt-work/page__view__findpost__p__153790

  50. elan March 17th, 2011 8:15 pm

@jedi: You have 300k cache files in your trash because the old cache design was flawed (it was slow, and ever growing). The new cache design is awesome, and so in order to migrate from the old one to the new one, we moved the files to the trash. Otherwise deleting them would have taken way too long.

In general it should detect a move just fine, but if it isn’t, you’ll end up with the old ones showing the /!\ icon (and I’d like to hear how you moved them in such a way that we didn’t detect it properly. You can click the trash icon on the bottom left to get rid of the extra entries, unless you have the {2} badge, in which case, congratulations, you’re the first to run into a bug I’ve been trying to fix since the release. Nothing serious, but those will go away in the next release.

  51. Brent112 March 17th, 2011 9:21 pm

@elan: so do all mp4 files have to be configured with “fast start” in order to be streamed without transcoding? If so how do we tell if files have that set?

  52. jedi March 17th, 2011 9:26 pm

@elan – yes i have the (2) badge, i’ve since split it apart but the deleted one is still in the libary. woot first bug!

i moved the files from (for example) /alien/alien.avi to a new directory /alien_quadrilogy/1_alien.avi on my fileserver (nfs4) not on the mac. it used to pickup moves like this just fine.

after deleting the 300k in the trash (which tooks hours to empty) and doing a library update, reboot etc; i now have more back in the trash!

clicking the library trash icon did nothing, i even think its greyed out as it literally didn’t even show as depressed when clicked.

also, cine21 seems to be the only agent available now (incredibly slow) not the old freebase.

other than that, thanks for the release lol ;-)

  53. dr coco March 17th, 2011 10:47 pm

@ elan (and the plex team)
great job on this new release, but the OpenSubtitles.org preferences button is not working (dutch guy here).

  54. Brandon March 18th, 2011 12:50 am

    search menu is AWESOME!!!
    no Google TV needed!

  55. Pete March 18th, 2011 12:58 am

    @Elan @knoxer

So if I understand this right, all the H264 MKV files I encoded with HandBrake WILL NOT directstream to my iPad and will still have to be transcoded ?
handbrake supports qt-faststart in MP4 files ( tick the ‘Web Optimised’ box) but only in MP4′s….which don’t support DTS in the container!
    I guess I could de-mux, re-encode and then re-mux all 600 movies……

If this is the case then It seems the killer feature is actually a bit of a damp firework!

    Please tell me I’m wrong!

    Cheers
    Pete

  56. elan March 18th, 2011 1:11 am

@Pete: Would we seriously release something that was a “damp firework”? I don’t think so.

Your qt-faststart MP4 files will be played using Direct Play, which means they won’t be touched, but instead just handed off to the iOS player.

Your H.264 MKV will be be played using Direct Streaming, which means that the H.264 gets moved over to a container that iOS supports, without any transcoding.

See my recent blog post about the features for more information.

  57. Pete March 18th, 2011 1:14 am

    @Elan,

Night shift, 2 hours sleep, take kids to school = foggy brain = pretty dumb.
I got Direct Play and Direct Stream confused and went into panic!!
I was really struggling to believe you’d do this to us!! Should have trusted you better……..can’t wait for the iOS update to arrive…you guys rock!! Thanks
Now, to buy that ATV2 !!

  58. mr pat March 18th, 2011 1:46 am

How opensubtitles agent work? I can’t download any subs…do I have to select an specific skin?..I used the plexalaska, click the button but nothing happens. Any help will be appreciated
    Thanks

  59. Rob March 18th, 2011 2:13 am

My Media server crashes on launch after the update:

  60. daiei27 March 18th, 2011 7:17 am

I hope Elan doesn’t mind. Just wanna mention a safe and easy way to donate to the Japanese Red Cross as they help earthquake/tsunami victims:
    http://www.google.com/crisisresponse/japanquake2011.html

As the Shepherd said to Mal, “I don’t care what you donate! Just donate!” At least that’s what I believe he said… ;)

  61. thempstead March 18th, 2011 8:24 am

Nice update with some interesting things … but it seems to have broken support for playing back MKV files with SSA subtitles contained within them (which worked fine on the previous releases).

  62. elan March 18th, 2011 8:29 am

@thempstead: I don’t believe that to be the case, it works for me; it may be that they’re not enabled by default?

  63. audix March 18th, 2011 10:10 am

    Very nice update indeed.

Damn, Plex is real fast now!!!

Also love the other features such as Search and no changing of art anymore..

Amazing guys, thank you very much ;)

  64. mitah March 18th, 2011 11:58 am

is there a way to disable all the internet results for searches … I really don’t care about all the videoclips (considering some of these results are “not available in my region”)

  65. Rafael March 18th, 2011 12:41 pm

    Rob,

I too am seeing my Plex Media Server crash every time since upgrading (March 16). This happened both after doing the auto upgrade after running Plex a few nights ago, and then after installing it again off the website. Is there some incompatibility? Elan, would crash logs help?

Thanks! Am very anxious to try!

  66. Brent112 March 18th, 2011 1:27 pm

So why if we do not have a “fast start” mp4 file. It cannot be direct played? But can it be directstreamed without transcoding.

  67. alex March 18th, 2011 3:04 pm

I am new to plex and blown away with it but the “Resume from” option doesn’t work on aptv2. Am I doing something wrong? Same thing with previous version. Please allow plex to have english subs with english audio.

    You guys are awesome
    Thanks

  68. Michael March 18th, 2011 4:05 pm

Great update, thanks for the effort!

I thought we would be able to download subtitles from opensubtitles.org, but this is not the case. Will this be a feature for a future release? after that I can’t think of much more that could be improved on PLEX.

  69. jd March 18th, 2011 7:26 pm

Unistalled old version 9.1.13. Installed new version. Everytime I start Plex I get a blank window with no picture, no text, no movies. Reinstalled to no avail. Restarted MacMini, to no avail. Using Adobe Flash 10.2. PMS picked up all of my movies, tv shows, and associated metadata. Picked up the cover art.

    Any ideas?

  70. elan March 18th, 2011 7:56 pm

@jd: Blank Plex like “white screen”? If so, you’re remotely logged in. Otherwise, post a screenshot.

@Michael: If you enable the OpenSubtitles agent, and configure the languages you want, and refresh your library, you’ll get subtitles.

@Brent112: Yes, non-fast-start MP4 files will be direct streamed.

@Rafael: There was an issue with a few plug-ins with bogus XML files. There is a forum post about it, will also be fixed shortly in the next release.

@Damian: You need to enable the local media agent, and refresh for the subtitle files to show up.

  71. jd March 18th, 2011 8:39 pm

Yes. I am actually using Apple Remote Desktop as we speak. MacMini hooks up to Denon receiver (HDMI), which is out for repair.

If I am at the office (20 miles away), and my daughter (8yo) is home (assuming receiver is fixed again), does that mean I can’t use ARD to turn on a movie for her to watch on the TV.

In Plex 0.9.1.13 I was able to do that.

  72. LucaSchiavoni March 18th, 2011 8:45 pm

Thank you for you work, i Love Plex at home (and on my iPhone in bathroom). Very nice update but I have to downgrade to 9.1.1.3 after 24 hours of errors during scan of Plex Media Server (Os X 10.6.6.).

Example: After the scan, in Movies, of 100 files.. I found in Media Server 80 different Movie titles and info OK, but also 20 identical titles of a single Movie name assigned to 20 different movies (and files).

Cleared, reinstalled, clean install, same error.
Recovered Plex 9.1.1.3 from TimeMachine, everything is fine.
Updated to new version, rescanned the list with Media Server, same error with movies titles repeated.

Im the only one with this absurd trouble? :(

    thank u in advance
    Luca\S

  73. elan March 18th, 2011 8:52 pm

@jd: There has been no change in that respect between the last version and this one. OS X requires that the computer is connected to a display (and sometimes booted with a display) so that OpenGL applications work.

  74. elan March 18th, 2011 8:53 pm

@Luca: You’re not, it was a silly bug, it’s been fixed, and we’re working to get a fixed release out shortly. Please accept my personal apology.

  75. Tobias Mårtensson March 19th, 2011 2:19 am

I cant click Preferences while the Opensubtitles.org agent is selected (or any other agent for that matter) – Its greyed out.

  76. Joel March 19th, 2011 3:12 am

This keeps getting better! I really need to thank everyone for the awesome work on PLEX. All we need now is a linux live ISO version so i can have plex on every tv in the house! “Those acer revos are allot cheaper than mac minis :) ”

  77. Jesper March 19th, 2011 8:04 am

Did a clean install and rescanned my entire library, it’s fast, but the media manager crashes ALOT, everytime I empty section trash, it crashes, 70% of the time when i want to edit fanart and click to choose to modify background or poster art, it crashes as well.

Also i had a few problems getting it to auto detect filename changes and moves.

All in all, very nice, but i’m sure looking forward to some bug fixes.

  78. elan March 19th, 2011 8:12 am

@Jesper, your odds of getting bugs fixed would increase if you let us know what platform you’re running on and gave us some crash reports and logs. Thanks :)

I am having a problem with subtitles in this new version. First subtitles are always disabled for all movies and tv shows no matter what I do. Also when I enable them it does not automatically assign the .srt file with same filename (in same folder) -> I always have to manually browse for matching subtitles. This is quite annyoing if I have to do this for every movie or show I want to watch, each time. Btw: I want to watch English movies/shows with English subtitles. Mentioning it because there was something mentioned about that Plex will disable subtitles when preferred subtitle language matches preferred audio language, which would be quite a problem for me. Anyway this was no problem up until 9.1 but seems to be broken now (if I am not missing something) . And about mentioned Opensubtitles agent, is this only available for movies or also for TV shows? At least I could not find anyhting in TV Shows settings.

@utility73: you need to make sure your local media agent is enabled, and you’ve refreshed your movies/shows, so that it picks up the subtitles.

I have the same problem as Mark March on my Mac Mini. After this update all video-plugins disappeared and Plex Online is empty. :-( Please fix it!

I have a problem with subtitles. I have an AirPort Extreme connected to the HD on which movies and tv shows are. They’re shared on the home newtork via WiFi. TV shows files are named exactly like the sub files (.srt). When I play an episode I need to manually select and browse subtitles for the show (this is not a problem) the point is that when I do so the subs are not displayed anyway. What should I do?

My folder/filename structure isn’t supported by Plex. I really want to use Plex but without having to rename or duplicate my files, is there a way to do so? I tried to make a “plex-friendly” folder of aliases but the client doesn’t play them. Is it possible to add a file in the library (whatever its filename or its path) and then match it with a database entry (like in iTunes)?

@ no.yumemi: can you give further details on why your media isn’t compatible with Plex?

(Please excuse my poor English :-)

Most of my files are asian series or animes. I use original titles and each season has its own folder named with the title of the season (it’s more convenient for animes). I also create a folder “extra” with all the extra footages from the dvd/bd along side the main episodes of the show.

For “Zero no Tsukaima” (3 seasons), It’s like this :

    - animes
    – ゼロの使い魔
    – ep.01 – japanese title.mkv
    – ep.02 – japanese title.mkv
    – …
    – extra
    – creditless opening.mkv
    – …
    – ゼロの使い魔 〜双月の騎士〜
    – ep.01 – japanese title.mkv
    – extra
    – ゼロの使い魔 三美姫の輪舞
    – ep.01 – japanese title.mkv
    – extra
    – another anime

Since the extra spaces have been deleted :

    – animes
    —- ゼロの使い魔
    —— ep.01 – japanese title.mkv
    —— ep.02 – japanese title.mkv
    —— …
    —— extra
    ——– creditless opening.mkv
    ——– …
    —- ゼロの使い魔 〜双月の騎士〜
    —— ep.01 – japanese title.mkv
    —— extra
    —- ゼロの使い魔 三美姫の輪舞
    —— ep.01 – japanese title.mkv
    —— extra
    —- another anime

Have I missed something? This application displays masses of icons of media I may or may not have somewhere on my network —- and that’s it. Is it not able to play the media? That might make it worthwhile. Otherwise I don’t see the point in it.
