Showing a bit of skin…
One of the other frequently asked questions we get is “what is the status of skins for Plex/Nine?” The answer, which I’m going to illustrate with a bunch of screenshots is “excellent!”.
A number of months ago, we invited the very talented Alexander (reddragon220) and Brian (maverick214) to take the early releases of Plex/Nine for a spin. They gave us great feedback on skin-related changes we were in the process of making, such as the media flagging, and together we made sure that the new features were skinner-friendly. They were then kind enough to work with our design master Jay on an evolution of the MediaStream skin, parts of which you’ve seen in the screencasts. I can’t tell you how much we appreciate the hard work and dedication from these guys, thank you so much for all the help!
As if helping us with MediaStream wasn’t enough, they also have their hands in their own skins as well as Plex ports of other skins, such as the popular PlexAeon. Also adding to the skinning talent is Marc (El Massman) who is, by his own description, “getting a load of bad-ass skins ready for Plex 9″. Because we’ve worked so closely with the skinners, porting over skins to Plex isn’t that hard at all, and advanced features such as the media flagging is trivial to add.
All three of these great guys took some time to send me sexy screenshots from the skins they’re readying (or already have finished) for Plex/Nine, and without further ado, here you have them (not bad, right?):

Looks very nice. I can’t wait until Wednesday. Keep up the good work!
The new skins are so incredibly great looking!!!! And can’t wait one more hour!
Looking good !
“How you doing?…”, Joey would say
Not bad, not bad at all…
Yep, these look amazing. Except for the first one because it’s featuring Avatar…. Such a bad Fern Gully remake.
But seriously, these are awesome, can’t wait to try them out.
I am kind of curious as to whether or not Plex remembers preferences for which skin you are using. Was kind of annoying if I switched to a different skin where one basically required wide banners for tv shows and then another would require posters instead to look correct. Then I’d have to go and manually change every single one.
Thanks for the frequent updates…
It makes waiting easier
Elan! You are killing it with these updates! You going to post something every day until the release? You’re doin well so far if that’s what you are trying to do!!!
Major thanks to Jay, reddragon220, maverick214, El Massman and all of the other skinners out there. Things are really looking great!!!!
Can’t wait! I expect I won’t see the light of day between Wednesday and uh.. err.. some undecided time in the future.
It’s okay though. I’ll live by the radiant light of my TV!
Thanks for teasing just a little more! Looking great!
@kriebe, banners and posters are both stored for tv shows now so there’s no need to be manually changing anything. no matter what view you’re in plex should always display the correct image. more views, less hassle.
That’s great to hear! Thanks for the info, El Massman.
Are we still going to have to download/install skins externally or is it going to be integrated into plugins ?
Looks awesome, really looking forward to throwing this one on my new Mac Mini. Great job everyone involved!
Tease me baby! Oh yeah! Just like that!…….
I notice that the skins now displays video quality information like codec and resolution. Is this captured when the media manger ingests the file meta data? Or is determined during playback with the FFMpeg decoder?
Looks amazing! God to see the Alaska skin in there as well! BRING IT ON
Hi!
Plex 9 looks really great!! But one question. Will you have support for the BCM crystalHD ?? I use it a lot!
Cheers!
“It makes waiting easier”
um. NO!
can’t wait to try it!!!
looks great
OMG!!! just great!!!
Can’t wait to use it!!!
Jay, reddragon220, maverick214, El Massman all you guys are fantastic and also off course the devs which made Plex availble. Thank you guys for all your hard work and efforts. These skins screenshots look awesome and i’ll be as happy as a child when i can use all this beautifull candy.
Cant fucking wait!
This would be perfect for the new iTv (wich hopefully will be launched by Apple on Monday)
It all looks awesome.. And do I spot Alaska as one of the ported themes for Plex nine? I thought that was dead. Applause all around nice work from all three guys.
They look great, good work.
I’m a bit concerned with the forced lowercase on those tvshow screenshots, though. I can see it’s made to match the theme, but it’s itching me.
I am absolutely enamored with the skin that looks like its utilizing the Metro UI.
Will there be a new API out or anything so that more people can help make themes?
god, this is beautiful…
Great !!!
Steve Jobs says “great” “amazing” “fantastic” and “one more thing” to describe how the new skins /skinning process are welldone.
Bill Gates just says “wow”.
And both are jealous…
Meanwhile, the Unix hacker with chinese food in his beard doesn’t care, he just loves his cold Terminal (what a crank)
THAT is a nice outlook! Wait, no, it’s a BUNCH of great outlooks!
Good to see Alaska in there! Some time ago I read it was dead and even considered (learning and then) porting it myself once 9 is out ’cause I like it that much!
Will the mediaflags show Dual Language Flags?
Props to the original authors at XBMC for crafting the original skins, and the very talented members listed above for porting them for the use of Plex/Nine. They are outstanding pieces of work!
Why is the iOS app available only in the US store?
I live in the EU and I can’t download it.
It’s available outside US to, just search on it in iTunes. They just linked to the US version and not the universal for some reason.
not very original, I would say try to make youre own skins rather than borrowing from other media center projects.
Are the original skins(xbmc) released under gpl? Where can I get the source for these then?
