- How do I add internet video such as TED, YouTube, CNET etc?
- Internet sources are added using the App Store found in the Applications menu. See the following screencast for more info. vimeo.com/3315184
- One of the plug-ins has stopped working.
- If a plug-in stops working, it’s likely that the structure of the site changed. This doesn’t happen very frequently with most sites, but it’s a definite possibility. When this occurs, an entity we call the “Campfire Robot” springs into action automatically and tracks us down to let us know, and shortly thereafter we can push an update. As such, if a site stops working, the best thing to do is to check the App Store for updates. If you have automatic updates turned on, check your install history to see if an update got installed while you were getting coffee.
- I don’t see the Applications Menu Item.
- If you previously used v5 of Plex we suggest deleting the folder called Plex found in ~/Library/Application Support/. Many things have changed and a fresh install will ensure the best performance with Plex.
- How do I make Movies and TV Shows show up in their respective areas with poster art, plot info, etc?

Netflix has never looked this good
A lot of people have been asking for this, and now your wish has been granted: Netflix on Plex. Tens of thousands of instantly playable movies, and a gorgeous interface with fanart, high resolution posters and rich metadata.
Major props to Scott for doing a brilliant job with this plug-in. He’s already hard at work at the next version.
The Netflix plug-in requires the latest version of Plex.
You also need the Silverlight plug-in installed.

I don’t even own Mac yet nor have I used Netflix, but wow!
Awesome job guys. Kudos. This is great news.
Very nice. Too bad the internet is turning more and more into a gated community. Netflix, iPlayer, MTV… * shakes fist at entertainment industry *
Also frustrated because the Dutch equivalent of iPlayer is an unbelievable piece o’ craptitude that uses a mixture of Windows Media, QuickTime and Real (believe it or not) so a cool plugin is still far on the horizon.
They’re experimenting with Flash, but on a limited (i.e. uninteresting) set of programs that will never leave the current beta stage. * sigh *
Very nice work as usual guys.
I just got my new mini a week ago and probably the best investment I have made in a long time. The app store was a great idea and this is just proof that the more open software is, the better it will be for everyone. I have been following Plex since the begining and its amazing how much it has grown over the last year. I cant wait to see what else is down the road….
Great work again and thanks for all the hard work.
Cheers..
Hmm I can’t seem to figure out how to view individual tv shows from a tv show season. Also the search screen doesn’t seem to work. It won’t bring up anything and I have to just go back in order to use plex again.
@Gustovier: You can use the comma/period (< and >) keys to skip back and forth between shows in a season, we’ll add more mappings for other devices soon. The search works for me and a few other people who I asked, not sure what’s up with that.
Anyone having problems getting video to stream? I’ve noticed I couldn’t get any of the NCAA games to stream nor any of the netflix movies. It just sits there at Opening Stream
@Dave: The exact same thing happened to me – quite embarrassingly, actually, as I was in the middle of a demo to Anna and Barkley – and it turned out I didn’t have Silverlight installed on that machine!
Oh my god, I have been gagging for this! Fantastic work guys!
elan: I bet Barkley knew Silverlight was missing the whole time!
FANTASTIC!! Plex is officially complete! I just installed it in like 10 seconds, and it works like a charm! Excellent!!!
Is a netflix registration needed in order to stream stuff or do they offer “free” content as well?
Great work guys
dumbest question ever… but I assume I need a paid current netflix account for this to work?
You guys are incredible! This makes me want to finally sign up for netflix.
Great Job, the Netflix plug in works and looks fantastic. I had the video hang up that another commenter mentioned as well. When I closed Plex it turned out Silverlight just needed to be updated. Easy as pie…
This and the Vimeo plug in are my favorites
As always, awesome work guys, thank you very much!
Quick question… I’ve only played with it for a few minutes, but checking the info under a bunch of streams that are available in HD, I find that the resolution is SD only at all times. We usually use the Roku box for Netflix, and not a browser, so I have to ask, is this a browser/silverlight limitation? Or can Netflix HD work within Plex?
Only 25 movies showing up on my Watch Instantly queue. Anyone else having this problem?
@elan: Hey man thanks alot for pointing that out for me. I feel like such a nub! Thanks for making the best media center app ever!
Is Netflix available in Germany?
With boxee if you exited while playing a netflix movie it would not let you play another until the original finished playing. Apparently netflix says this is a problem with 3rd party apps usually. i.e. if you start a movie and plex crashes, can you resume the movie or do you have to wait 90 minutes or however much playtime is left? I suppose I could get around this by increasing my plan.
I may just have to reactivate my Netflix account now! Awesome work, as usual!
Does anyone know if HD is working? I tried shows that I know stream in HD on my xbox360 like the office but they arent coming in HD for me.
Does the streaming part of Netflix work in the UK yet?
Been to their website but cannot find any info.
This is awesome! I just signed up for netflix.
Okay, what am I doing wrong?
When I enter the Netflix menu all I can see is “Netflix preferences”. I have already specified my e-mail and password, and verified that Silverlight is installed and up-to-date.
Netflix works fine in my browser as well as Boxee. But in Plex, it simply doesn’t show any options other than “Netflix preferences”.
Thanks for another awesome update!
Just to answer many people’s questions…
1) You must be a paid Neflix subscriber to use their streaming service.
2) And, unfortunately, only US residents can join Netflix.
I can not believe this is a free program. Thank you for creating Plex.
I cant use Netflix, but I want to say VERY well done to you all who worked to bring this to the Plex community. Especially mad props to Scott who worked a LOT of hours to get this down.
As always, I give my family much love and am so blessed to be part of a team that works as tirelessly as it does to provide what is, let’s face it, the best damn media center out there.
Peace!
Anyone else stuck at “signing in”. When playing a queue item back? It worked this afternoon but isn’t working now…
OUTSTANDING. You guys seriously kick arse. I got my MacMini for my birthday a week or so ago and first thing I did was install Plex. Having Hulu and now Netflix on there…OMFG sweet.
Great work! I’ve been splitting my time between Plex and Boxee, mostly because Boxee already had Netflix. Now I can stick to one media center application and am quite excited about this.
One issue and two requests:
1 – My instant queue only displays 25 movies in the list although I have well over 100 in my queue. Boxee shows 102 in my queue.
2 – Please add the ability to remove titles from the Netflix queue. This feature is in Boxee and it makes queue management a bit easier.
3 – Boxee also has a My Recommendations menu that I sometimes find helpful.
There are other differences, but this is a great start and the three listed above are most important to me.
Thanks for the great work!
It sits stuck at “opening stream”. I have silverlight installed and restarted the computer but nothing…. hulu works fine so i know my internet connect isn’t the problem. help:-(
@Ben: I’d check the forums to see if anyone is having similar problems, I know a few threads have sprung up as there seem to be a few people having issues. Not to worry, though, we’ll figure it out
Works on mine… love it! Best thing ever! I am one step closer to canceling cable and just keeping an internet connection…
I have been using Plex on my mac mini for the last 2 weeks and love it. Adding the Netflix app makes your media center program a deal closer for me to drop cable tv. Great job.
Can somebody make a Netflix streamer that supports PPC architecture or one that works on PS3? My $2,200 Dual 2.0 G5 is only 3 years old and can’t play Netflix movies. Thanks Microsoft !! (Silvershit)
Seems to truncate my instant view list after around 20-30ish items. I have 90 in there right now.
@jon: Is fixed in the next version, out shortly.
Elan, I wish you gave foreigners an alternative to Hotspot Shield for accessing to Netflix, Hulu and so on from outside US. Hotspot is so slow…
Sure that´s easy for you
Thank you for this amazing software.
Greetings.
Just started using Plex and love it – Have dropped cable and am very happy about it – Just one question though – when I try use the NetFlix app it only shows the NetFlix Preferences choices (Username/Password). I have a NetFlix account and have put that info into Plex, but can never get to the screen for the movies. What am I doing wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Is there a way to rewind to the beginning of a TV Episode. For instance If I watch episode 3 of 30 Rock, and I want to rewind to the beginning of episode 3. I can’t seem to find a way to do this.
@Jamie: we’re going to be improving the TV section shortly and have single episodes instead of the whole season, so it’ll be much easier.
Yes please single episodes
Also when an episode finsh it says play next episode, but the button is inside the netflix “red screen” cant pushit even with the mouse, and if i press fwd in my apple remote it freezes on getting episode information, well it doest freeze just stay on getting ep info but i can hear the audio.
I will try with “,”, “.” shortcuts and see what happens
@sgarza I’m having the same issue with playing the “next episode” in a series. Anyone have a solution for this, preferably using only the Apple Remote?
Elan, thanks for a great program! When I access Netflix through Plex, the amount of available titles is much less than what is available through the Netflix Watch Instantly tab on the Netflix site. Any solutions to this?
My netfix app will not even open/ launch from the view my videos screen. I have reinstalled it and deleted it many times… Please help me. I have a netflix account but the damn app acts as if I am not pushing enter to launch it. All other apps work great! Please, please tell me what is going on…
