Release 0.7.11: Fixes and Improved User Experience

Lots of good stuff fixed in this release, and we’re happy to bring it to you. You can download this release here.

  • FIX: Crashes in Plex Media Server with Safari Adblocker and other similar plug-ins.
  • FIX: Pulled a fix from XBMC for variable framerate FLV files (important for a new plug-in).
  • FIX: Crashes in Apple Movie Trailers with 5.1 audio (integrated Ryan’s excellent audio fixes).
  • FIX: Some of the menu shortcuts were broken (thanks to migueld for pointing this out).
  • FIX: Some other crashes in Plex Media Server with badly behaved or misconfigured sites.
  • FIX: Much improved Swedish translation, with many thanks to atrus.
  • FIX: Updated to the latest Amazon scrapers (thanks to John Lockwood).
  • NEW: Support for executing Javascript inside plug-in site configurations (as an action).

And some really nice new stuff. James and Isaac worked hard on usability for this release. First of all, we’ve made it easier for you to get to the App Store:

They also renamed some of the top level menu items, and added favorites, since with the ever-growing amount of content, favorites can be very helpful (use the context menu to add items to your favorites):

And finally, you know how most applications have this thing called “Help” where you can go to seek assistance inside the actual program? Novel concept, right? Well, James whipped up a plug-in, Isaac populated it, and now you can browse helpful screencasts without leaving Plex:

Right now we’ve added the three plug-in screencasts, and Alexis’ excellent setup overview. We’ll be adding more in the very near future, and if you have suggestions for content you’d like to see, please let us know. Also, if you have any interest in making some helpful screencasts, please let us know. (I have to say, watching a screencast of Plex *inside of Plex* is quite an unusual experience.)

One minor note: we really want to express our gratitude to all the websites we support. They have really been helpful, as the changes they make to their sites have ended up assisting us greatly in finding and fixing bugs in our code, as well as enhancing the flexibility of the plug-in code and site configuration files. Hulu works again in this new release, I’m happy to say.
Here’s Barkley, artfully dangling some sandy drool.

Guys…I really didnt think I would like any changes to the original vision of MediaStream, but I have to say that the changes to the top-level events really make a difference.

I’ve managed to have a little play around, and it alls a little more intuitive. I’m very pleased! Also, access to favourites to App Store works well imo.

Finally…HELP? It totally came out of left-field for me, but is a great contribution to the application.

    Nice job guys.

    Nice little improvements, thanks.

I wonder if there will be an option to place some app’s in the mainmenu?

NICE! The favorites thing is EXACTLY what I was looking for (I actually was trying to figure out how someone else did this in the forums a little while ago).

Bit of a complaint/request though… You’ve added these new menu items, but there’s no way to disable them in preferences as far as I can tell. I just honestly don’t need to App Store enough to make it take up a slot on my main screen. Any chance we could get the option to hide it?

Also, I don’t suppose it’s at all possible to hide the Quit menu item too?

These are both obviously small things since it’s just a sort of “keeping things neat” thing. In the meantime though I’ll enjoy my awesome media center and Hulu, haha. Many thanks for everyone’s work on this!

Brilliant. It’s almost exhausting to get awesome new stuff pretty much every day. Onion news, IGN, South Park. Sweet! Too bad hotspot shield seems to ruin things now and then.

I’ve one question though: Why aren’t the apps under the “applications” menu item? I assumed that we wouldn’t have to browse through the files (video) to get to them anymore. Moreover I prefer to keep my itunes stuff as default, so having music apps (as well as image apps) with the other applications would be better.

If I’m the only one who feels this way then feel free to ignore this :-P

Thanks for this, I really missed the Favorites in the top menu. I upgraded to the latest Plex but I’m having a newbie moment (I don’t even think I’m a newbie! I’ve been using plex for quite some time now)

I can’t seem to locate where to get the favorites and the app store to show on the main menu and the “blade” is now in the center, not to the left as it used to be. I recall a settings option for that, but now I can’t find it!

    Help!

@zyp: You may be inadvertently using an older version of MediaStream. Check to see if you have a ~/Library/Application Support/Plex/skin/MediaStream folder, and if so, delete it.

    Elan,

Great Success! Plex is really amazing. Like really amazing. Thanks for the quick responses and all the hard work; it’s really become the centerpiece of my home theater.

I haven’t donated to the beer fund yet, but I’ve convinced that Plex is the solution for me. Thanks so much for the great product and quick responses.

    Enjoy the beer.

Just out of interest, does Plex7 support auto 50Hz/60Hz/23.976Hz output switching yet?

This and DTS-HD Master Audio and TrueHD output are the only things stopping me from using it :)

OK, OK, I know about the hi-def audio not happening but the true framerate output is what I really desire – then I’m there full-time!
