- How do I add internet video such as TED, YouTube, CNET etc?
- Internet sources are added using the App Store found in the Applications menu. See the following screencast for more info. vimeo.com/3315184
- One of the plug-ins has stopped working.
- If a plug-in stops working, it’s likely that the structure of the site changed. This doesn’t happen very frequently with most sites, but it’s a definite possibility. When this occurs, an entity we call the “Campfire Robot” springs into action automatically and tracks us down to let us know, and shortly thereafter we can push an update. As such, if a site stops working, the best thing to do is to check the App Store for updates. If you have automatic updates turned on, check your install history to see if an update got installed while you were getting coffee.
- I don’t see the Applications Menu Item.
- If you previously used v5 of Plex we suggest deleting the folder called Plex found in ~/Library/Application Support/. Many things have changed and a fresh install will ensure the best performance with Plex.
- How do I make Movies and TV Shows show up in their respective areas with poster art, plot info, etc?

One Year Ago Today…
Exactly one year ago, I made the following post to the XBMC forums:

One year later, we have a great media center that feels at home on the Mac, a talented group of developers and designers, t-shirts, a website, a canine mascot, and most importantly, a thriving community of great people. Many, many thanks to everyone who helped along the way, I’m incredibly excited to see what the next year of Plex brings!

Great news! I’ve recently started learning Cocoa/Objective-C so I can help with anything I can
Calls for some kind of HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!
Thanks for all the work you all did… and will do !
You rock.
Is there a way I can help you?
I’m a motion graphic designer (After effects and some “simple” 3D).
If you need some help, I’m in.
Imagine what plex has come to in 1 year, cant imagine what another year will make to plex
Plex is the best media center on the face of the earth as of right now and Plex is my media center!
Congrats on the one year anniversary, amazing work!
Once again, thanks for all the hard work and congrats on the one year anniversary.
And yet NO FAT OUTLINE in subtitles, an option every media player has (even quicktime+perian)
Nice. How about talking to the spotify guys and putting spotify into Plex? THAT would be awesome!
Come a long way in one year. Huge props. I’ve been a keen Plexer for a good while now, and have been recommending it strongly.
Will try work out a way to contribute to the project.
Keep up the awesome work.
Congratulations! Your efforts are very much appreciated. I can’t wait to see what the next year will bring.
Congrats! After seeing a demo of Plex online, I went out and bought myself a Mac Mini and haven’t looked back since. I’m looking forward to what another year of development will bring.
@Mike:
I’ve already got Spotify in Plex (sort of
).
I have a playlist in Spotify called “Plex”.
I whipped up a quick AppleScript to start and begin playing a song from the randomized playlist in Spotify.
If spotify is already running, it’ll quit Spotify.
Save the AppleScript as an AppleScript bundle (or whatever it’s called) and add it to applications. If I Start Spotify, the actual AppleScript will terminate a short while (seconds) later, returning me to Plex, where the screensaver kicks in pretty quickly, giving me music and a never-ending slideshow of awesome pictures.
Of course, this is a hack at best.
Spotify are hard at work providing an official API for us though, so as soon as it’s available, I imagine it will be no problem at all querying the Spotify database, look handle currently playing songs etc. etc.
Basically, I aim to have some sort of integration with Plex within 24 hours of the API being released, because it would be awesome to replace the Music section with Spotify.
For people interested in finding out more about Spotify, I actually have a few invites left.
I’ll give one out to the first person who asks for it (i.e., make sure to let me know what your email address is).
@Rylin: Spotify looks cool, pity it’s not available for the US.
Hello Rylin.
I wouldn’t say no to an invite. My e-mail is gustafl [at] telia [dot] com
Thanks.
I love this project! And I’m so waiting for next version! Keep up the great work
Rylin, Spotify looks interesting, if you got invites left, cue at scape.net thanks!
Only one year???
Wow… You’ve done really great job.
I can’t believe it’s been only a year.. Seems like I’ve been using it much longer than that.. I can’t seem to remember what I did without it?
Congrats, and here’s to many more years..
That post is exactly like something that I would post just to go nowhere due to this thing called work and whatnot. Great work by Elan + team and all the XBMC coders.
I’m also really looking forward to Spotify support. We’ll just have to wait for that API to be finished. In the meantime I can recommend getting Mira. You can build a nice custom set for the Apple remote + Spotify and if you ask really nice you can get them to build a custom profile with duo press for you.
Elan, congrats on the one year thing. You have started and made others start on media centers for os x. Thank you.
@Rylin, i wouldnt mind one of those spotify emails.
jakem3tz at macmail.com
@elan: aye, Spotify free (ad based) is limited to a few countries right now. Premium should be available world-wide though, however I only have free invites atm.
If the situation changes, I’ll be more than happy to send you one.
@Gustaf: you’ll ave an invite in a few minutes. Spotfy’s website is acting up atm.
I believe the invite messages are fairly anonymous, so it might end up in your spamfolder :-p
I’ll actually sign up for premium today, so I should be getting a few more invites shotly. If anyone else wants one, you know the drill
I can’t check out spotify, but I came across this website that lets you create online playlists and has a pandora like feature and plays music based on genre/sound of a particular sound.
http://www.grooveshark.com or
http://listen.grooveshark.com
I’m using this instead of pandora in the states.
Is this similar to spotify?
Time really flies!! Happy birthday to the project, and a zillion thanks Elan for making it coming to live, many many thanks to the developer and the community around it!
Wow, just one year? It is so well rounded that it seems it must’ve been in development longer than that.
Indeed, makes you curious about the coming year. Spotify is pretty cool (it’s fást too) but it sucks that their rollout is so limited.
As with all cool things the music industry will not embrace but probably choke it. One good thing, I have *no* idea where they get the music from, when I play it.
A fantastic achievement for the first year guys. Looking forward to the next year.
Lars Plex has been in development for many many years as XBMC as the original post by Elan says it has been 1 year since the original XBMC version has been ported to OSX and forked off as Plex.
So the reason it feels like its been developed longer is because it has much much longer just not on OSX
Good job man! Plex kickass XBMC & front row right now. Keep working and thanks for your job!
Congrats on the awesome progress! Can we have the next Seven now please?
Its amazing seeing how far Plex has come in a year in comparison to how…well, nowhere…Front Row has gone
Congrats Elan! You and the gang have come a long way on this since I donated your first bit of beer money.
*lifts up his glass to you* Cheers mate.
wow, that’s a lot of progress for a year.
Interesting to note that you were in “team Plex” back then. So you had the name already thought up from the start.
I have to say Plex is by far the best media center I’ve used on Mac. Thank you for all your hard work!
Keep up the good work! Plex is must have software for the mac right now!
)
(Now if only someone could find the time to make a nice free remote app for the iPhone everything would be even better!
Rylin: I would love to get one of those spotify invites, seems like a great service. Email is “magnot at gmail dot com”
It’s amazing what you guys have accomplished in one year. I also remember one year ago being amazed by the new front row and how great that was…at the time! Thanks for the ground breaking work.
Why do people give alan all the credit? I mean sure he’s doing something great for the community but it’s not like he started everything from scratch in one year. Comments like plex kicks XBMC ass just make me sad and so I just wanna point out that Team XBMC deserves some credit because after all the majority of the work was done by XBMC coders. cheers.
Happy Birthday !
Thank you for all the work, great App !
Hella Cool man…bigups to the entire team. My Mini broke down last week (mobo dead), I was divested, but a AppleStore genius was able to fix me up +1 day and Plex was back online. Thanks for the awesome app, 2009 plex…to di werl!
Thank you for leading this project; I know it’s not easy dedicating so much time and energy to keep this thing going. But the end result is surely worth it, congrats
Elan, you and the other Plex Devs are Gods and I bow at your temple of Greatness!!
Seriously though, you have produced a excellent piece of software that looks and feels so at home on a mac. Thank you so so much.
P.S. Is the guy who complained about no outline feature on Subtitles having a laugh or what?!?! If that’s all he has to worry about ROFL
Yup congrats on your 1 year birthday – Plex is developing very nicely. Oh yeah and much credit to XBMC as well – I use both everyday.
Cheers to Plex and XBMC!!
congratz and many thanks for a great app
cheers
I love Plex! Thank you guys.
Handling of bluray-movies is what I would like to happen in 2009. I am ripping my bluray movies to iso-files, and then watch them in Plex. It would be nice if subtitles and menues did work.
congratulations elan and team. haven’t actually tried plex, but i’m glad your started the port.
1 year and 10 days later i found all of this. And indeed, it’s kicking frontrows ass! Thanks a lot!
J.
Very good job done on this application! I am using it for a couple of months now and I just love it! Congratulations!
You did a terrific job, guys. Thank you. But… plex still needs usability. LOTS of work on usability.
Plex is the best free Mac program I have found! It doesn’t lack anything so far, and it works perfecly for what I need. To show how happy I am to have found plex, I just donated
y’know speaking of kicking Front Row’s ass…. I realized there’s occasionally the rare apple trailer that frontrow handles better, or sometimes a wmv that flip4mac deals with a bit better. But thanks to plex’s application launcher, I have it launch frontrow for those rare things, then back to plex, all with the one apple remote! It’s pretty seamless!
Sadly, due to xbmc and boxee using the same remote code; using plex as a launcher for those doesn’t work quite so seamlessly [for say I want to check out hulu or something via boxee]; but maybe that could be tweaked in the future. I am pretty pleased to use plex as my remote-control application launcher!
