Plex/Seven: One More Thing
You know that Programs section, that doesn’t really do anything except display that photo of the Windows laptop which sends understandable chills down your spine? Well, James has fixed that:
See, isn’t that much better? While he was in there, he decided to actually make it do something useful too. Let’s see if this next screenshot doesn’t sum it up nicely:
Like, oh my god. Support for launching external applications from Plex? Check! Full-size icon rendering? Check! Exiting Plex while the launched application is running? Check! Stopping the Plex Helper to allow the launched application to use the Apple Remote? Check!
Of course, any use of Front Row is immediately reported to the Plex Servers and your IP is banned for life from the site, but don’t let that stop you.

Ugh, when are we going to see some releases of this start spinning out
@nick: Um, is later today (HST) soon enough for you?
How much later?
Hehe its half past eleven in my country!
I cant stay awake all night =)
Very nice. After seeing all of these feature previews I’m really starting to see Plex take it’s true shape on the OS X platform (as opposed to XBMC). Keep up the good work.
I have to admit, though, I was hoping that the “one more thing” would be 1080p24 support. That way I would finally be able to throw my stupid Popcorn Hour out the window.
I even removed every trace of Front Page from my Mac - I don’t like the interface and the limited functionality, so why waste space on it?
okay .. i see DVDPlayer .. and i see Front Row .. but whats that third icon ??
and o yeah … that looks nice in Mediastream, Horizon gonna work too ??
wait .. is that a add app icon ??
Because it’s easier not to waste time deleting it.
Front Page? I think you mean Front Row.
Brilliant! Is there an option for not quitting Plex when you launch a program? I can see this working nicely with packaged Applescripts as well. Add a nice icon and Applescripts available in Plex. BUT, I don’t want Plex to shut down everytime I set my sleep timer…
Little bit of info about Apps in Plex here:
http://wiki.plexapp.com/index.php/Getting_Started#Applications
Oh.. Another thing. I was going to donate, but then something hit me; according to the button, donations goes towards beer. I love beer and you deserve a whole lot of it. But with how Plex 7 looks, I have a feeling that the amount of donations are going to go up. So… More donations = more beer. More beer = more drunkenness. (Drunkenness = fun
) More drunkenness = less time for coding. Less time for coding = less updates…
dude i think i actually love you right now.
I have wanted this for so long.
Long live Plex, the undisputed best media app on any platform.
Haha great stuff! This new release is going to be amazing. Im assuming apps like Mame OSX should work via this?
Is that third icon an external hard drive?
Will I be able to eject my external hard drive within Plex?
i’m getting chills .. think about it
this opens up the possiblity of launching games/emulators on your tv through plex
the final dagger .. R.I.P. xbox .. you’ve served me well over the years
Wow, that feature is truly worthy of a Steve Jobsian “One more thing”.
This is absolutely brilliant! It will go a long way to making it much easier to use apps like EyeTV, and the DVD Player. It’s also a great stop-gap solution until things like MAME can be integrated more heavily as well (which I’m assuming is still the intention, but I appreciate you guys have been BUSY!)
Can’t wait for Seven!
Any idea if their will be plex:// support for the original XBMC? I would love to be able to access my iTunes/iPhoto shares from my original (and, yes, inferior) xbox in the living room.
I hope that launching DVD Player from inside Plex doesn’t avert attention from properly supporting DVDs inside Plex! Yes I know I can mount the dvd, then navigate to that volume and launch the vob, but it would be great to support it fully.
If launching one of these apps is able to kill PlexHelper to make the remote available to other apps, then does this mean that you then have to manually start Plex (and therefore PlexHelper) after you are done? Or is there some AppleScript magic to restart PlexHelper after the app is closed?
I’m so looking forward to this release! It’s an amazing effort you guys put into this application and I truly appreciate it!
@Anthony: from the wiki .. it seemed to me that when you load a program from the Applications screen it would load the app, kill plex & plex helper. when you exit that app it will restart plex & plexhelper.
“When a new application is launched, Plex closes until the opened application is closed.”
ps. Love the “One More Thing” ending .. Steve would be proud of this one
pps. Next time you guys are gonna need to do a real Release Event .. the whole shabang .. Convention Hall, demo’s, hour and a half video showcasing what you did in the past couple days .. eheheh
@pletopia: Yeah, you can add other applications. The next release event might be a Plex Surfing Party
@opet: No option yet, but I can totally see your point.
@Anthony: James has some magic in there to restart both the helper and Plex when the application exits.
@opet: Now that the release has finally been made, I think I’ll have at least one beer to relax.
Please… when 7 is going to show up?..as others I can’t wait !!..
And as someone pointed… will be nice to have a better management of start/stop/sleep/sleep countdowns etc…
I’m pretty new with this amazing “thing” you are doing and i’m absolutely in love with it!!!
Thanks… beers coming soon
