Release 0.1.7: A Few Small Repairs
I had a bit of time to patch a few holes, so hopefully this will fix some issues with the last release. This version is also built with the new XCode 3.1 compilers, although I wasn’t brave enough to try gcc-4.2.1. Pick it up in the usual place.
- NEW: I hacked on CxImage some more, and now we extract thumbnails directly out of the RAW files if we can. This means that browsing though directories of RAW files is now extremely fast. The embedded thumbnails are also resized and rotated appropriately.
- FIX: A merge got messed up, and the exit-on-hang (with Aeon skin, mostly?) returned. The skin unloading is again disabled, so exiting should never hang.
- NEW: I updated to the latest code, and so D4rk’s event server is now included. This means that someone could now work on building support for the PS3 remote (using this, perhaps?), as well as maybe move the Apple Remote code out into a daemon so that pressing the Menu button starts XBMC. The daemon could be written in Obj-C or Python (or any other language, of course).
- FIX: Scrapers have also been updated. If you have problems, hit the C key, select “Set Content” and then select Settings to make sure the scraper preferences are up to date and compatible with the new scrapers.
- NEW: Added the fancy disc image background that Fredrik made for us to the DMG. Thanks!
This is Barkley out on his first kayaking trip. The canoe tipped, we were all thrown into the ocean, and Barkley swam over to Anna and took away her life jacket. I’m so not kidding.

Nice! Just love to see when this feed got some news in it. It always delivers. As does Barkley it seems. Killer dog, in more than one way
Could and should the changes you made to CxImage be back-ported to the Linux and Xbox versions of XBMC, or even submitted upstream as patches to the original CxImage developer? @ http://www.xdp.it/cximage.htm

Seems like you missed to include disc image background. Opening dmg files shows white background.
Noob Mac question:
I’ve already installed 0.1.6 how can I install this new release? must I uninstall previous version? and If so how can I unistal it?
TIA Polve.
@Polve,
Just copy the new XMBC app over the top of the old one.
If you ever want to uninstall XBMC just drag the app to the trash.
NO! even for osx, NEVER overwrite.
it will usually work but it MIGHT crap up. be on the safe side (hence saving us the irritation of the forums being flooded by ppl with issues caused by improper installs).
Get something like AppTrap that automatically searches for folders related to your programs when you trash them so you know the whole thing is uninstalled. At this early stage of OSXBMC, I always delete the related folders of XBMC on my drive and start fresh. It keeps the chances that your problems are related to a bad (un)install virtually non-existant and this saves time for those trying to help you.
@spiff,
I take it you don’t have a Mac? Overwritting the app is the way to do it in the Apple world.
Everything is bundled up in the package. The userdata folder is stored elsewhere in ~/Library/Application Support/XBMC so you can always delete that if you like / run into problems.
Thx. I’ll try it.
Are we getting ISO support in the future?
Works perfect, thanks again. Can someone explain if it is possible to get the scripts working. I have some on my Xbox that i really miss on my Mac.
niad,
Scripts are on to-do list so in near future you should expect full python script support.
Go Barkley!
Nice. Finally it dosen’t crash on exit. Keep up the good work!
if the mac deletes the program, then transfers the new ‘the way it works in the mac world’ is okay. if not, it doesnt matter if that’s how it “works” in the mac world, it wont work in the xbmc world. problem isnt with userdata, problem is with skin. believe me i know what i’m on about.
and no, i dont own a mac and i wouldnt touch one with a ten inch pole. let the flames commence
@spiff,
OS X deletes everything and replaces it with the new bundle. Nothing from the old bundle is left behind. So simply copying the application over the top of the old one is 100% safe.
You should give OS X a try, its far better than anything else out there.
rite. okay, then all good.
i have tried osx. i can’t stand it.
@cortez: Yep, I’m a total n00b. Fixed in the next release.
@spiff: There is definitely a transition curve for OS X. You need to approach it with an open mind and give it a few months. I don’t know a single person who gave it an honest try and said “$%^% this, I’m going back to Linux|Windows”.
@kaido: That would be a good bet, but not before Python support.
I have managed to reproduce the “black thumbnails” issue, expect a fix in the next release.
It’s beginning to look real good now. =)
My only concern is that browsing through SMBS shares
is deadly slow!
I have my PC as a “server” for all my media.
With my XBOX it goes really fast to browse and play
movies.
Browsing through the MAC Finder
towards my PC is also fast.
…but through the MAC XBMC it’s to slow. =(
Im using “cable” not WIFI.
Any idea’s?
@spiff: aren’t you in the wrong forum? best stick to what you’re good at.
@elan: keep up these great builds
I want my life jacket back, pronto.

I am using 0.1.6 with SMB to a windows file server. I am having zero issues with the network speeds. I also have an xbox with xbmc on the same network and they both work very well. The only time I had an issue was when I used password protection, that seemed to cause issues at one point. I am playing HD content (1080 mkv) over the network without issues.
Network speed is excellent. I can even run 720p MKV’s through WLAN to my Mac book from a Windows (XP) server.
Was browsing an SMB drive and when I selected a Video_TS folder, I got a crash. Here is the log…

Thanks
My Nero Digital AVC backups are not working. They show fine for a second or two then go all “squirly”. They have AAAC 5.1 and subs.
It’s not crashing just showing incorrectly.
Just a quick comment to tell you that you are a hero!
Love the “I’m pretty drunk, so there’s a good chance that I’ll screw up this release” post!
